The Japanese Odachi (大太刀) was a formidable weapon in 14th century feudal Japan, carried by samurai and infantry soldiers. It was so large that it had to be carried on the samurai’s back, or by hand, or by an assistant. The blade was long and front heavy, and the techniques used involved lots of downward cutting motions, adding gravity to the cuts. Beginning in the early 1600s, swords of this length became illegal in Japan, and these blade transitioned to more ceremonial uses, and were often seen displayed in shrines and as offerings to the gods.

This rendition of the odachi features a stainless steel blade that is a massive 51″ long. The overall length of this sword is 68″ — over five feet! The traditional black handle wrappings and sheath make this a great display piece for your collection.

The samurai in the center of this print shows how the sword may have been carried.
